Dealing with football matches data is very challenging. You need to deal with a lot of details and updates happening during a football match while keeping them usable and easy for your user. This challenge you will always face while you are designing your live score section especially when you are doing multiple leagues or championships. So while going through this exercise you need to make sure you are considering five things:
Right Data Layering
When you have a lot of championships in your scope of your live score section, you will face the challenge of too much championships and data to display. The right approach to organize you data is to create number of data layers to be displayed. The basic information is in the first layer and this should be in the landing page. The deeper you go with layers the deeper is the data you are displaying. The best practice is to have 4 layers with the basic information in the first layer in your live score section landing page ending by players touches in the deepest layer.
Self Explanatory Landing Page
Usually the landing page is the page that has the basic information and the scope you are having in your live score section. Make sure that your user can understand how to navigate this page to deeper data layers and what scope or number of championships are covered. Be clear how you will distribute the championships you are covering in this page, and get insights from your users during the information design phase to make sure that the landing page is explaining the number of leagues and different data layers you are having.
Sort your Championships
You need to think how you will sort your leagues or championships based on three factors: the status of the game, the timing of the game and the user interest. You need to have the right match displayed first. Your user from UAE will not be interested to see a result of a Malaysian league first while Al Jazeera Vs Al Wehda (local derby) is going on. This means that you don’t know what he is looking for.
Always remember that the basic information are the most important ones. Keep them updated and accurate all the time. This will help you acquiring new users during the big events and keep the confidence of your users in their preferred lives score portal.
With the big number of championships or league you have, definitely you will have variation in the level of coverage you have for each league. Some leagues you are covering with the deepest level up to the touches of the players and statistics. Other leagues you are covering for results and goal scorers only. You need to make it clear for the user what match is covered on what level to set his expectation and avoid disappointment.
